DENNIS SCHOENFELD AND BUSTER BENNET GET OPENING NIGHT WINS
CONCORD, N.C. (March 28, 2004) - Concord's Dennis Schoenfeld scored his
career-first Concord Motorsport Park victory in the 125-lap Future Cellular
Big-10 Series super late model feature and Buster Bennet of Monroe won his ninth
career race at the speedway in the 50-lap NASCAR Coca-Cola late model stock
feature on New Star Environmental Night at the Races.
Other winners were: Jay Payne of Thomasville in the 35-lap Tommy
Johnson's Motorsports Warehouse limited late model feature; Adam Beaver of Concord in
the 25-lap mini stock feature; Brian Love of Mt. Pleasant in the 20-lap New
Star Environmental pure stock feature; and Chad Johnson of Concord in the 15-lap
Speedway Plumbing hornets feature.
Schoenfeld turned the fastest speed in qualifying and drew the second
starting spot alongside defending champion Freddie Query of Mooresville who drew
the number one starting spot. At the drop of the green, Schoenfeld grabbed the
lead with Query chasing.
Query's night would end early with a crash resulting in a 17th-place
finish. Schoenfeld set a blistering pace throughout the event fending off the
challenge of Ted Musgrave Jr. of Mooresville who retired late in the event with
mechanical woes.
Schoenfeld let the entire distance enroute to the victory. Chuck Barnes
Jr., the 2004 CRA Sunoco Series Champion from Louisville, Ky., made his first
Concord start pay off with a second-place finish. Eddie Massengill of Goldsboro
was third, Chris Dunn of Raleigh was fourth with A.J. Ganino of Birmingham,
Ala. completing the top five.
Concord's Roger Lee Newton jumped from the second-starting spot to the
point at the start of the late model stock feature. Bennet started third and
chased until making his move late in the race for the win. With three laps
remaining Newton's car wrecked also collecting third-running Travis McIntire of
Harrisburg in his first late model stock start.
Bennet, who won his previous eight features last season, picked where he
left off rolling to the triumph. Travis Sharpe of Swansea, S.C. finished
second with defending champion Todd Bradburry of Concord third. Bobby Cooper of
Burnesville was fourth with Bryan "Dude" Thomas of Monroe fifth.
Payne started fourth and raced to his career-first Concord victory in the
very tough limited late model division. Jeff Melton of Monroe was second with
Jimmy Voyles of China Grove third. Concord's Kenneth Cook was fourth with
Rob Carroll Jr. of Charlotte fifth.
Beaver, the defending series champion, started second and rolled to the
win in the mini stock feature. Roy Maness of Star was second with Marshville's
Clint Mills third. David Pennell of Kannapolis finished fourth with Kenny
Brooks of Concord fifth.
Love started second and scored his seventh-career victory at the track.
Steve Irvin of Concord was second and Chad Allmon of Mt. Pleasant third. David
Miller of Stanfield finished fourth with Alvin Thomas of Monroe fifth.
Chad Johnson started on the pole and won the hornets feature. Wayne
Harrington of China Grove was second. Ben Smith of Harrisburg finished this and
Bobby Measmer Jr. of Concord was fourth.
Winner Friday night at the quarter mile oval were: Ryan Blaney of
Greensboro in the Bandolero Bandits feature; Mitchell Coble of Mt. Airy in the
Bandolero Young Guns feature; Bruce Benson II of Lexington in the Bandolero Outlaws
feature; Zane Hedrick of Charlotte in the Legends Semi-Pro feature; Thomas
VanWingerden of Huntersville in the Legends Pro feature and the Thunder Roadster
feature.
Racing continues Saturday night at the half-mile tri-oval with the NASCAR
Dodge Weekly Series sharing the spotlight with the O'Reilly United Sprint Car
Series Asphalt Thunder Tour. On Friday the Legends and Bandolero drivers will
compete at the quarter-mile oval.
