MANGUM AND LEMMONS SCORE CONCORD WINS

CONCORD, NC. – 2003 Track Champion Shaun Mangum of Monroe and Billy Lemmons of Salisbury scored wins in the twin-35-lap Town and Country Ford Late Model Stock Division at Concord Motorsport Park.

Other winners on Independent Tribune Night were: Bobby Measmer Jr. of Concord in the 40-lap JRD Earthworks Limited Late Model Feature; Steve Irvin of Concord in the 30-lap Coca-Cola Pure Stock Feature; and Tracy Mullis of Monroe in the 20-lap Fast and Furious Fours feature.

Mangum took the top spot from Chuck Crump of Star on lap 19 of the first feature and raced to his 25th-career late model stock victory at the track. Crump held on for the second-place finish. Defending champion Shave Brafford finished third with Lemmons fourth and Danny Efland of Irmo, S.C. completing the top five. Lemmons started the second race on the outside of the front row and used that spot to take the early lead. While he cruised to his second-career late model stock win Brafford and Mangum put on a tire-smoking duel for runner-up honors. Brafford finished second with Mangum and Crump third and fourth. Opening night winner Jeff Melton of Concord completed the top five. In four late model stock races this season there have been four different winners: Melton, Brafford, Mangum and Lemmons.

Measmer needed 31 laps to get to the lead, but once there roared to his career first limited late model win at the speedway. The young driver now has 28 wins at the track and has won in three of the four current divisions – limited late models, pure stocks and fast and furious fours. Defending champ Ben Hinson of Kannapolis finished second with Kenny Brooks of Concord third. Mark Brooks was fourth with Raymond Theiss, both of Concord, rounding out the top five.

Chad Allmon of Mt. Pleasant appeared to have won the pure stock feature, but a spacer in his left rear wheel caused his car to fail post-race inspection. That gave the win to Steve Irvin of Concord, his 23rd career triumph. Charles Hutto of Monroe was second with Mint Hill’s Billy Symanski Jr. third.

Tracy Mullis of Monroe scored his third-career win in the fast and furious fours feature. Jake Simpson of Albemarle and Bradley Kimrey of Norwood completed the top three.

The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series gets a couple of weeks off before returning on May 12. This Saturday it’s the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series taking over the challenging half mile for the Naturally Fresh 250 presented by Greased Lightning.
