TRAVIS SHARPE GETS THIRD-STRAIGHT NASCAR VICTORY
CONCORD, N.C. (May 9, 2005): Travis Sharpe of Swansea, S.C. scored his
third-straight NASCAR Coca-Cola Cup late model stock feature win Saturday night
in the 100-lap feature.
Other winners were: Brian Pedrick of Denver in the 35-lap Tommy Johnson's
Motorsports Warehouse limited late model feature; Kenny Brooks of Concord in
the 25-lap Golden Gait Trailers mini stock feature; Brian Love of Mt. Pleasant
in the 20-lap New Star Environmental pure stock feature; and Bobby Measmer
Jr. of Concord in the 15-lap Speedway Plumbing hornets division.
Roger Lee Newton of Concord jumped from the pole position to the early
lead in the late model stock feature. Sharpe, who started second, moved around
Newton on lap seven to assume the top spot. Shaun Mangum of Monroe, the 2003
late model stock champion, made his return to the speedway and made his presence
known with a strong challenge on Sharpe.
On lap 66 Mangum inched ahead exiting turn four and led the balance of
the race to the apparent win. However, a post-race inspection found an
infraction on the spacer-plate that connects the carburetor to the engine and Mangum
was disqualified handing the win to Sharpe.
Todd Bradburry of Concord had his best run of the season with a
second-place finish. Buster Bennet of Monroe was third, Terry Brooks Jr. of Concord was
fourth and Chris Gordon of Kannapolis completed the top five.
Pedrick started on the pole and led flag-to-flag for his career first
victory at the speedway. Jay Payne of Thomasville survived two spins to finish
second after charging through the field and challenging for the win late.
Daryle Callahan of Monroe finished third, with John Thornton of Lexington
and Mark Brooks of Concord completing the top five.
Adam Beaver of Concord had a dominating performance in the mini stock
feature leading the entire distance. However, a post-race inspection found that
the front cross-member on his car had been altered and he was disqualified.
Kenny Brooks Jr. of Concord was awarded the victory with David Pennell of
Kannapolis second. Clint Mills and Jamie Long both of Marshville finished
third and fourth. Kannapolis driver Eric Harrington finished fifth.
Love finished second in the pure stock feature, but a post-race
altercation between Chad Allmon, that apparent winner, and another competitor resulted
in Allmon's disqualification. Steve Irvin of Concord was second with David
Miller of Stanfield third. Patty Markin of Troutman scored a fourth-place finish
and Richard Kuntz of Concord was fifth.
Measmer Jr. won his fourth race of the season in the hornets feature. Ben
Smith of Harrisburg finished second with Brandon Cooper of Concord third.
Friday night winners at the quarter-mile oval were: Josh Waring of
Concord in the Legend's pro division; Dustin Genebacher of Charlotte in the Legend's
semi-pro division; Clay Hair of Mt. Pleasant in the Legend's masters
division; Artie Clever of Harrisburg in the Bandolero outlaw feature; Tyler Green of
Concord in the Bandolero young guns feature; and Darrell Wallace Jr. of Concord
in the Bandolero bandits.
Racing resumes Saturday night as the Greater Cabarrus Chamber of Commerce
presents Cabarrus County night at the races. Residents of Cabarrus County
with proper identification will be admitted free of charge.
The NASCAR late model stocks will headline with a 100-lap feature.
Limited late models, mini stocks, pure stocks and hornets will be joined by the
sleek thunder roadsters.
