CHUCK CRUMP WINS TWINS ON USG NIGHT

CONCORD, N.C. – Chuck Crump of Star, NC piloted his #8 R. L. Kellam Company 2008 Ford Fusion to victory in both Town & Country Ford Late Model Stock car races Saturday night at Concord Motorsport Park.  Other winners included Jay Payne and the #08 Smiley’s Barbecue / Cheerwine 2008 Ford Fusion in the J R D Earthworks Limited Late Model division; Charles Hutto in the #1 WIXE-1190 AM / Auto Trader.com Chevrolet Monte Carlo in the Coca-Cola Pure Stock division, Wayne Harrington of Salisbury in the #3 C & D Salvage “SUPERMAN Honda in the conclusion of the Time Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours Feature started last week; Bradley Kimrey of Norwood in the #99 Tim Marburger Honda / Northside Auto Sales / H & K Auto / Doug's Garage "WILD THANG"  Honda Prelude in the special Fast & Furious Fours 50-lap event and Josh Walsh of Concord in the #57 “Nuclear Banana II” in the Insurance Auto Auction Bootlegger Brigade debut.

After two consecutive rainouts, Saturday’s rain came at 6:30 PM while Late Model qualifying was underway, instead of after the start of the first feature.  The wait was on then, until the track crew did an outstanding job in drying the racing surface so the Fast & Furious Fours special 50-lap feature could get underway at 9:19 PM.

But first… Crump wins twins.  Track management decided last week after the fourth rain-out in ten scheduled events that the season was beginning to run short in the NASCAR Whelen All-American season sanction.  The feature division (Late Model Stock Car at Concord) drivers can count their 18 best finishes toward the NASCAR national and state championships and the track needs sixteen races to keep the minimum number of events committed to in the sanctioning agreement.  Thus, the traditional 75-lap features were divided into two 35-lap features for this and the next four events to make the numbers happen before the September 14th cut-off for national points.  Since qualifying was rained out yet again, the starting order for the first event was established by track points, placing Dale Love on the pole, Justin Hill 2nd and Mr. Crump in 3rd.  Chuck moved into first by lap 3 with hill following to the finish.  Love claimed 3rd, Brad Kurth of Kernersville came in 4th and Jeff Melton claimed 5th.  The starting order for the second feature was the finishing order from the first.  Mr. Crump again wasted no time in establishing his lead, and held on for the second win with Hill again second, Love again third, Kurth fourth and you’ve probably guessed by now that Jeff Melton finished fifth.

The J R D earthworks Limited Late Model race was, in my humble opinion, the most exciting of the evening.  Limited Late Model qualifying was held earlier in the afternoon and Jay Payne jumped out to the lead from the outside of the front row.  Lat year’s champ, Bobby Measmer, Jr. returned Saturday for his first start of this season and was mired back in eleventh for the start.  Measmer worked his way to a distant second by lap 14 when Jerry Miracle (D.D.S) took a spin alone in Turn Three to bring out a caution flag and tighten the field.  On the restart Measmer was right there behind Payne and on lap 17 pushed ahead of Payne. Now, Mike Terry in the #23 Chevy had also gotten in the mix and the three drivers were hammer and thong for several laps.  Another yellow flag waved on lap 35.  On the restart, it looked as if Measmer missed a shift and Payne was able to squeak by for the lead and held on until the finish.  Payne first, Measmer second, Terry third.  Fourth place went to Steve Ackerly in the #66 and fifth to the #92 of Sam McAulay.

The Coca-Cola Pure Stock event was won by Charles Hutto of Monroe, claiming his fourth win in seven races.  Cooper Faason, also of Monroe claimed a well-earned second, Clinton Baker third, Todd Bradburry fourth and Mike Southwell fifth.

The Fast & Furious Fours Fifty, a special 50-lap event, was won by Bradley Kimrey with Tracy Mullis of Indian Trail second, Chad Miller of Kannapolis third, Jake Simpson of Albemarle fourth and Eric Kimrey of Norwood fifth.  The Fast & Furious Fours event that started last week and was halted by the rain, showed completion with Wayne Harrington of Salisbury the winner, Tracy Mullis in second, Jake Simpson third, Chad Miller fourth and Eric Kimrey fifth.

The Insurance Auto Auction Bootlegger Brigade finally made their debut (after two rain-outs) with Josh Walsh claiming first, Kirby Allen in the “Rimer Motors” themed car second, Rusty Drye in Vigilante” third, Matt Drye in “Stinger” fourth and David Miller claiming fifth running just for fun in Patty Markin’s #112 Pure Stock.
