MANGUM GETS THIRD CONCORD WIN OF THE SEASON

CONCORD, N.C. – Monroe’s Shaun Mangum rolled to his third victory of the season Saturday night in the 75-lap NASCAR Town and Country Ford late model stock race at Concord Motorsport Park. It was the 2003 track champion’s 27th career win at the track.

Other winners on Pizza Hut Kid’s Night were: Jay Payne of Thomasville in the 25-lap JRD Earthworks limited late model feature; Billy Symanski Jr. of Mint Hill in the 20-lap Coca Cola pure stock feature; Tracy Mullis of Monroe in the 20-lap fast and furious fours race; and Rob Hall of Asheville in the 20-lap INEX King of the Ovals thunder roadster event.

Mangum started seventh and used a large dose of patience racing forward. By lap 31 he moved to third and moved to second on lap 47. Opening night winner Jeff Melton of Concord lead from the green and was next in Mangum’s windshield.
A restart late in the race proved what Mangum needed, as he moved inside Melton entering turn one and into the lead. He cruised to the win. Melton finished second with Chuck Crump of Star third. Travis Sharpe, the 2005 track champion from Swansea, S.C. had his best finish of the season with a fourth and Shane Brafford of Concord completed the top five.

Concord’s Kenneth Cook led the first 14 laps in the limited late model feature before Bobby Measmer, Jr. of Concord moved to the point. He would lead four laps before Payne moved past into the lead and on to the win. Measmer finished second with Cook third. Brian Conforth and Jimmy Simpson, both of Concord, completed the top five.

Symanski started sixth and needed 16 laps to get to the lead, passing Charles Hutto of Monroe. It was his second win of the season. Hutto was second with Chad Allmon of Mt. Pleasant third.

Mullis, driving the “Enforcer” car, started 12th and sliced his way to the lead, and the fast and furious fours win, by lap 6. Jake Simpson of Albemarle and Cody Carelock of Charlotte finished second and third.

Hall led one lap – the final lap – in winning the thunder roadster feature. He survived a last lap duel with Jesse Bunnell of Monroe who finished second. Adam Welch of Concord finished third.

The racing was delayed over two hours when rain moved through the area. The limited late models, pure stocks and thunder roadsters had feature lengths shortened to make sure the track could complete the racing before the midnight curfew.

The track will be idle this week with NASCAR action returning on Saturday, July 14 for the popular twin-35 feature format for the late model stock drivers.
