MULLIS AND MELTON SCORE CONCORD WINS

CONCORD, N.C. – Chad Mullis of Mint Hill and Jeff Melton of Concord were winners of the twin 35-lap NASCAR Town and Country Ford late model stock features Saturday night at Concord Motorsport Park. Other winners on Independent Tribune night were: Jay Payne of Thomasville in the 40-lap JRD Earthworks limited late model feature; Billy Symanski Jr. of Mint Hill in the 30-lap Coca-Cola pure stock feature; and Jake Simpson of Albemarle in the 20-lap fast and furious fours feature.

Melton started on the outside of the front row and wrestled the early lead away from defending champion Shane Brafford of Concord. Bryan “Dude” Thomas of Monroe moved forward to second and raced side-by-side the leader in attempt to get the lead. He never did and Melton held on for his second win of the year.

Thomas settled for second with Brafford third. Mullis was fourth with Shaun Mangum of Monroe fifth. Mullis started second in the nightcap and held the early lead. Mangum got alongside and actually led lap 20, but could never complete the pass. Thomas also challenged late before spinning his car allowing Mullis to score his 23rd career win at the track. Brafford, Mangum, Melton and Chuck Crump of Star completed the top five.

Payne started on the pole and secured the lead on lap two from Mike Terry of Charlotte who started alongside. Once Payne was in front he never looked back scoring his third consecutive victory. Bobby Measmer Jr. of Concord was second with Terry third. Todd Bradburry and Brian Conforth, both of Concord, completed the top five.

Chad Allmon of Mt. Pleasant took the early lead in the pure stock feature and led the first 17 laps. Symanski then took command and rolled to his third-straight win at the track. Allmon held on for second with defending champ Steve Irvin of Concord finishing third. Charles Hutto of Monroe finished fourth with Ben Smith of Harrisburg fifth.

Simpson took the lead on lap 11 of the fast and furious fours feature and fended off a strong challenge at the end from Tracy Mullis of Monroe to earn his third win of the season. Mullis was second with Jeremy Whitman of Lexington third.

NASCAR racing returns Saturday night July 21st with the late model stocks headlining with a 50-lap feature. The limited late models, pure stocks, pro challenge series and fast and furious four drivers will also be on the docket.
