SHANE BRAFFORD A NASCAR WINNER AT CONCORD
CONCORD, N.C. – Hometown star Shane Brafford extended his point lead with
his third victory of the season Saturday night at Concord Motorsport Park in
the 100-lap NASCAR Coca Cola late model stock feature.
Other winners on Craftsman night were: Brian Pedrick of Denver in the 35-lap
Tommy Johnson’s Motorsports Warehouse limited late model feature; David
Miller of Stanfield in the 25-lap Golden Gait Trailers pure stock feature; Brad
Ballard of Kannapolis in the 15-lap Speedway Plumbing fast and furious fours
feature; and Drew Calhoun of Southern Pines in the 35-lap 600 Racing thunder
roadster feature.
Bo Foust of Harrisburg started second and led every lap of the late model
stock headliner. Behind him, Brafford and Davin Scites of Mooresville waged a
spirited battle for what appeared to be the runnerup spot. Brafford crossed
the line second.
While Foust survived the race he didn’t make it through the post-race
inspection process. The rods and pistons in his engine did not meet specifications
for a speedway-purchased “crate” engine. The track has claimed the engine
back and Foust was disqualified.
That gave the victory to Brafford. Scites finished second with Andrew Thomas
of Monroe third. Billy Lemmons of Salisbury was fourth with Shaun Mangum of
Monroe fifth.
Jeff Melton of Monroe paced much of the early portion of the limited late
model feature. His night soured on lap 19 when second-running Mike Terry of
Charlotte and Melton made contact in turn one with both cars wrecking.
Pedrick picked up the lead and went on to score his second win of the
season. Ben Hinson of Kannapolis was second with Terry Hoggard of Concord third.
Robbie Wells of Stanfield was fourth with Scott Morin of Plainville, Ct. fifth.
A mid-race rain shower reeked havoc on the pure stock feature with the top
three racers – Chad Allmon of Mt. Pleasant, Alton Boyd of Kannapolis and Steve
Irvin of Concord – wrecking on the slick race track.
Ninety minutes later the race resumed with David Miller at the point and he
scored his first win of the year. Rev. Buddy Compton of Mooresville was
second with Brandon Cooper of Concord third. Allmon and Boyd rallied back to
finish fourth and fifth.
Ballard led flag-to-flag earning the win in the fast and furious fours
feature. Adam Morgan and Brad Deal, both of Mt. Pleasant, completed the top three.
As has been the case in previous visits, the thunder roadster feature was a
tremendous battle between Calhoun and Kyle Beattie of Concord. Calhoun was
able to score his first win of the season over Beattie and Adam Welch of
Concord.
Racing resumes Saturday night with Speedway Plumbing night at the races. The
late model stocks, limited late models, pure stocks and fast and furious
fours will be joined by the Virginia mini cup cars.
It will also be Boy Scout night at the speedway with scouts and leaders, in
uniform or their unit t-shirt, admitted free.
