IT’S BRAFFORD AGAIN AT CONCORD

CONCORD, N.C. – Shane Brafford of Concord scored his third-consecutive victory Saturday night in the 150-lap NASCAR Coca Cola late model stock feature. The win on Independent Tribune night was worth $2,000 for the point leader.

Other winners were: Mike Terry of Charlotte in the 35-lap Tommy Johnson’s limited late model feature; Steve Irvin of Concord in the 25-lap Golden Gait Trailers pure stock feature; and Ben Smith of Harrisburg in the 15-lap Speedway Plumbing fast and furious fours feature.

Billy Lemmons of Salisbury started second and set the early pace until lap six of the late model stock feature when Shaun Mangum of Monroe moved to the point. Brafford patiently tracked down the leader and on lap 34 took the top spot. Over the balance of the race, Mangum and Randy Burnett of Kannapolis kept constant pressure on Brafford; but never could move past. It was Brafford’s fifth win of the year. Burnett had his best finish of the season with a second-place run. Davin Scites of Mooresville was third, Andrew Thomas of Monroe was fourth with Terry Brooks Jr. of Concord fifth.

Ben Hinson of Kannapolis took the early lead in the limited late model feature with Jeff Melton of Monroe quickly moving to second for the challenge. On lap 12 Melton took the advantage and crossed the finish line first. On the last lap Terry moved past Hinson for what was thought to be a second-place finish, but post-race inspection found Melton illegal giving Terry the
win. Hinson finished second with Terry Hoggard of Concord third. Kenny Brooks and Brian Conforth, both also of Concord, rounded out the top five.

Chad Allmon of Mt. Pleasant led the tightly-contested pure stock feature until lap 23 when the suspensions on his car broke giving the lead to Irvin. He rolled to the win over Steve Ackerly of Monroe. Allmon maintained enough speed to finish third with David Miller of Stanfield and Patty Markin of Troutman completing the top five.

Smith started last in the fast and furious fours feature and needed every lap getting to the front. He passed second-finishing Nikki Long on the final lap for the win. Jeff Smith of Mt. Pleasant finished third.

Racing resumes Saturday night and it will be kid’s night at the speedway. Many extra activities are planned for the young racing fans including rides in the actual race cars. The limited late models will go extra-distance with a 50-lap feature.
The late model stocks, pure stocks and fast and furious fours will also be in action.
