MANGUM CAPTURES FOURTH WIN OF 2007 SEASON
Shaun Mangum of Monroe captured his fourth Town and Country Ford late Model Stock car victory of the 2007 season Saturday night at Concord Motorsport Park. Other winners in the J R D Earthworks Night at the Races for the NASCAR Whelen All American Series included Bobby Measmer, Jr. in the J R D Earthworks Limited Late Models; Brian Love in the Coca-Cola Pure Stocks; Tracy Mullis in the Fast & Furious Fours and Concord’s own Jeff Melton in the visiting Redneck Racers division.
The Late Model Stock Car feature promised lots of excitement and did not fail to deliver. Chuck Crump of Star, NC in the number 8 Gatza Marble - R L Kellam Company 2006 Ford Fusion had grabbed his third pole of the season with a lap at 108.630 miles per hour average earlier in the day. Mangum sat outside front row in his Lawrence Chevrolet - Mangum's 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS. The duo began to dice at the drop of the green flag but a great race also developed just behind them as Terry Brooks, Jr. in the Sharpe Construction number 02 Chevy and Shane Brafford in the A R G Motorsports number 03 began an exciting side by side run that would last for most of the race. Yellow flags were displayed on lap 6 as Toby Parese of Mohnton, PA got a bit sideways in Turn One and again on lap 25 as the number 33 Chevy of Patrick McVay came through Turn Three sideways after contact between two other cars gave McVay’s car a shove past the limits of adhesion. Laps 39 through 50 were the best, as crump looked inside at every opportunity, but just couldn’t quite make it stick. Mangum ran to this fourth victory of the season with crump a very close second. Third went to Shane Brafford with Chad Mullis in the number 1 Miracle Dental Center Chevy fourth and Terry Brooks, Jr. crossing in fifth. With only three points events remaining in the 2007 season, Chuck Crump still leads at this juncture with 1028 markers, Shane Brafford is just 6 points back and Mangum is 62 back of the leader.
Kenneth Cook of Concord lead by a nose at the end of the first lap of the J R D Earthworks Limited Late Model feature in the number 18 JRJ Express ’06 Monte Carlo SS. Cook and Bobby Measmer, Jr. of Harrisburg in the number 14 Monte Carlo SS diced for the lead until lap 15 when the caution flag was displayed as Cook’s Chevy did some sideways motoring off Turn Three. Jay Payne of Thomasville in the number 08 Cheerwine - Walt's Custom Exhaust Monte Carlo and the number 13 car piloted by Randy McAnulty of Concord were collected up in the mess. “We put a spring rubber in the right rear in practice, but it made the car too loose” said Cook when asked what caused the spin. The 18 and 13 cars pitted under caution for repairs. On lap 8, after the restart, the number 03 Joe Gibbs Racing Oil - Stock Car Steel & Aluminum 2006 Ford driven by Raymond Theiss of Concord and the number 16 Rary’s Repair Dodge Charger driven by John Rary, Jr. tangled in Turn One, leading to a lengthy cleanup under a red flag. On the restart Measmer flexed the muscle on the number 14 Chevy an secured the point with Brian Conforth of Cape Coral Florida in the number 33 Horizon Home Contractors – What’s Your Sign ‘06 Monte Carlo SS and Mike Terry of Charlotte in the J R D Earthworks Chevy #23 in close pursuit … all the way to the checkers. Fourth place went to Kenneth Cook and fifth top Chad Allmon, in his Limited Late Model debut in the number 8 Town & Country Ford – Allmon Masonry Monte Carlo. In the Limited Late Model standings, Measmer is on top with 830 points with Mike Terry 38 back.
Brian Love of Mt. Pleasant (NC) jumped to the point in the #25 Service Master - A.B.S. Insulating - Randy McAnulty Race Cars 1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo on the green flag in the Coca-Cola Pure Stock feature and only looked back to see who was following. It was a short race for David Miller of Stanfield as he steered his number 112 mount onto pit road and retired on lap 2. Caution was displayed on lap 5 after Billy Symanski, Jr. blew the right rear tire of the number 41 Shawn O'Connell's Roof Expressions - Fast Lane Auto Recovery Chevrolet Monte Carlo and went for a huge spin coming off Turn Three. The field split to avoid him and there was no serious contact. After the restart Ben Smith of Harrisburg in the number 44 BBUC Chevy moved up on the bumper of Love’s Monte Carlo and offered a short threat for the lead but faded. Patty Markin of Troutman, NC retired her number 38 Monte Carlo on lap 27 as Love held his lead to the finish and gave the crowd a tremendous burnout and doughnuts display while celebrating his win. Smith finished second with points leader Charles Hutto of Monroe claiming third in the number 1 Iron Horse Motorcycles - Charlotte Sunroofs Chevrolet. Fourth place went to Clinton Baker in the number 2 Chevy and Symanski finished fifth after recovering from the spin. Hutto maintains the points lead with 804 in his column, but Ben Smith is challenging with 792.
The Fast & Furious Fours opener was marred by two incidents as Evan Cupples of Concord in the Wayside Family Restaurant number 14 Honda grazed the wall off Turn One and moments later Cody Carelock of Charlotte in the number 23 Honda Accord took a spin in Turn Three with Myron Hatley, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant in the number 78 Honda and Brandon Jordan of Monroe, NC in the number 1 made hard contact with the ouside wall attempting to avoid the 23. Without a lap complete a complete restart was ordered and Tracy Mullis of Monroe in “The Enforcer” Honda jumped to the point immediately from his front row starting position. The number 74 “Albemarle Bulldogs” Northside Auto Sales Honda piloted by Jake Simpson of Albemarle began another charge through the pack and moved into second in the latter laps but couldn’t quite close on Mullis who led at the finish line. Simpson crossed second, Bradley Kimrey of Norwood third, Jeremy Whitman of Lexington, NC fourth and Jeff Weisner, also of Lexington fifth. The Fast & Furious Fours standings have Mullis on top at 858 with Simpson 20 markers back.
The nightcap event with the visiting Redneck Racers was won by Concord regular and Late Model Stock Car competitor Jeff Melton, in his first-ever ride in a Redneck Racer. His “Air Force One” themed car finished ahead of the “Big Show”, driven by Shaun magnum, “The Vigilante” of Rusty Drye, Bobby Wallace’s “Off Duty” and “Trouble” driven by Matt Drye.
