DAVIN SCITES SCORES CONCORD WIN

CONCORD, N.C. – Davin Scites, the West Virginia native now living in Mooresville, won Saturday’s 150-lap NASCAR Coca Cola late model stock feature at Concord Motorsport Park.

Other winners on Independent Tribune/Scout Night at the speedway were: Brian Conforth of Concord in the 35-lap Tommy Johnson’s Motorsports Warehouse limited late model feature; Steve Ackerly of Monroe in the 25-lap Golden Gait Trailers pure stock race; and Jeff Smith of Stanfield in the 15-lap Speedway Plumbing fast and furious fours feature.

Monroe’s Shaun Mangum, the 2003 track champion, showed old form leading early Saturday night in the late model stock feature. As he paced the field, Scites was racing forward from his sixth starting position. On lap 59, Scites had reeled in Mangum and took the lead. While Scites commanded the rest of the race, he did have to fend of a strong late-race challenge from current point leader Shane Brafford of Concord who could get alongside the leader but never past. Scites scored his second win of the season over Brafford. Mangum was third with Chuck Crump of Star fourth. Defending champion Travis Sharpe of Swansea, S.C. finished fifth.

Kenneth Cook of Concord jumped from the pole positions and led at the drop of the green in the limited late model feature. A caution on lap 30 reset the field for the five-lap run to the finish with Conforth moving in on Cook’s back bumper. With three laps remaining Conforth moved inside Cook to challenge for the top spot. The duo ran side-by-side with Cook inching out a lead at the stripe each lap. That was until the final circuit when Conforth had the winning advantage by the length of his front fender. Mike Terry of Charlotte actually looked to make it a three-wide photo-finish, but came up just short in third. Kenny Brooks of Concord and Ben Hinson of Kannapolis completed the top five.

Ackerly started on the pole and led the entire distance in the pure stock feature. Chad Allmon of Mt. Pleasant was able to get alongside Ackerly on a couple of occasions but never could take the lead. Ackerly powered to his career-first Concord Motorsport Park victory. Allmon was second with Steve Irvin of Concord third. Brian Love of Mt. Pleasant returned the speedway after a few weeks of recovery from a broken arm with a fourth-place run while Charles Hutto of Monroe finished fifth.

Smith led flag-to-flag in the fast and furious fours feature scoring his career-first victory. Tracy Mullis of Monroe and Jake Simpson of Albemarle finished second and third.

Friday night legends and bandoloro racing was rained out. These drivers take center-stage again this weekend with two nights of racing on the quarter-mile oval. The NASCAR drivers have Saturday night off.
