BILLY LEMMONS GETS CAREER-FIRST LATE MODEL STOCK WIN AT CONCORD
CONCORD, N.C. – Billy Lemmons of Salisbury has enjoyed considerable success
at Concord Motorsport Park. Prior to this season, he had visited victory
lane 24 times in limited stock and limited late model action. On Saturday he won
the 100-lap NASCAR Coca Cola Cup late model stock feature, his first win in
the premier division at the track.
Other winners were: Ben Hinson of Kannapolis in the 35-lap Tommy Johnson’s
Motorsports Warehouse limited late model feature; Steve Ackerly of Monroe in
the 25-lap Golden Gait Trailers pure stock feature; and Tracy Mullis, also of
Monroe, in the 15-lap Speedway Plumbing fast and furious fours feature.
Lemmons started in the second spot and wasted little time establishing
himself at the front of the field. Throughout the event he fended off a constant
challenge from 2003 track champion Shaun Mangum of Monroe.
Mangum’s run ended early though when a flat tire on lap 90 allowed Claude
Kelly of Pine Ridge, S.C. to challenge for the lead. He was able to get
alongside Lemmons exiting the final corner, but could not get the pass completed.
Lemmons and Kelly were followed by Terry Brooks Jr. of Concord, Andrew Thomas
of Monroe and Shane Brafford of Concord. The finish clinched the track
championship for Brafford.
Hinson started second and was ahead of a multi-car wreck on the initial
start of the race. On the restart Hinson took command and never looked back. From
there the race ran un-interrupted to the checkered flag.
Hinson maintained a few car lengths of advantage throughout the race with
Brian Conforth of Concord charging from sixth to second, making his final pass
on the last lap. Mike Terry of Charlotte was third with Raymond Theiss of
Farmingdale, N.Y. and Payne Pickles of Live Oak, Fla. fifth.
Ackerly started on the pole and won the second feature of his career and
second consecutive in the pure stock contest. He led the entire distance and won
comfortably.
Chad Allmon of Mt. Pleasant was second with Concord’s Brian Love third.
Alton Boyd of Kannapolis returned to action with a fourth-place finish with
Steve Irvin of Concord fifth.
Mullis, driving “The Enforcer”, sped past early race leader Adam Morgan of
Mt. Pleasant on lap three of the fast and furious fours feature to score the
win. Jake Simpson of Albemarle was second with Jeff Smith of Stanfield
completing the top three.
Twenty-two area pastors suited up for the Faster Pastor race and when the
dust settled, The Reverend Danny Wilson, pastor at Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Albemarle, NC
was the winner. Bryan Alexander from Concord United Methodist was second,
with Jeffrey Rushing of the Westford United Methodist Church third.
Friday night winners in the bandolero divisions were: Hayden Reeves of
Cornelius in the beginner bandits; Casey Lajoie of Kannapolis in the bandits; Sam
McAuley of Huntersville in the young guns and Bruce Benson II of Lexington in
the outlaws.
Steve Daniels of Charlotte won the legends semi-pro feature with Tyler Green
of Concord winning the pro contest. Carlos “Mercury” Moore of Concord
scored the victory in the masters feature.
NASCAR racing returns to Concord along with a visit from the very popular "Rednack Racers" on September 30. The Redneck Racers will also make an appearance during the October 7th season finale'. They will compete in 25-lap nightcap features both evenings. This weekend the legends
and bandolero teams have two nights of racing on the quarter-mile oval to complete their season.
