TRAVIS SHARPE SCORES DOUBLE-POINT WIN AT CONCORD
CONCORD, N.C. – Travis Sharpe of Swansea, S.C. raced to his eight win of
the season Saturday night in the 100-lap NASCAR Coca-Cola late model stock
NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series feature on Saturday night at Concord Motorsport
Park.
Other winners were: Terry Hoggard of Concord in the 35-lap Tommy Johnson’s
Motorsport Warehouse limited late model feature; Jerry Perdue of Wirtz, Va. in
the 25-lap Virginia mini cup feature; Kenny Brooks in the 25-lap Golden Gait
Trailers mini stock feature; Steve Irvin in the 20-lap Speedway Plumbing
pure stock feature; and Wayne Harrington of China Grove in the 15-lap Speedway
Plumbing fast and furious fours feature.
Sharpe, the point leader, started on the pole position with double-points on
the line for all drivers. He needed a dominant performance and delivered that
leading the entire distance on the way to the victory.
Late in the race, Andrew Thomas of Monroe put the charge on and closed to
within challenging distance of Sharpe but could not race to the lead. Thomas
finished second with Bo Foust of Charlotte third. Chuck Crump of Star was
fourth with John Freeman of Huntersville fifth.
Hoggard started on the pole in the limited late model feature with Kenneth
Cook of Concord alongside. The two were the class of the field and raced
comfortably in the front two spots. Hoggard rolled to his second consecutive and
fourth win of the season.
Cook finished second with Brian Pedrick of Denver third. Josh Walsh and
Randy McAnulty, both of Concord, completed the top five.
Perdue scored the victory in the Virginia mini cup feature over Jack Wines
of Salem, Va. Completing the top five were: Matt Wade of Roanoke, Va.; Corey
Berkstresser of Lexington, Va.; nad Michelle Averette of Fayetteville.
Brooks started fourth and raced to the win in the final mini stock feature
at the speedway. David Pennell of China Grove finished second and won the
track championship.
Eric Harrington of Kannapolis was third with Michael Tucker of Thomasville
fourth. Concord’s Linda Cunningham completed the top five.
After a tremendous three-way battle for the top spot, Irvin won the pure
stock feature event. The other combatants in the race, Brian Love and Chad
Allmon both of Mt. Pleasant, finished second and third. Junior Cress of Concord
and David Miller of Stanfield completed the top five.
Harrington won the fast and furious fours feature over Chad Miller of
Concord and Ben Smith of Harrisburg.
Legends division winners on Friday night at the quarter-mile were: Josh
Waring of Concord in the pro ranks; Glenn Jamieson of Charlotte in the masters
division; and Jordan Anderson of Columbia, S.C. in the semi-pro class.
Bandolero winners Friday were: Jordan Phillips of Cornelius in the bandits;
Cole Miktuk of Rock Hill in the young guns; and Benny Mingo of Kannapolis in
the outlaw divisions.
The speedway kicks off a huge fall season of racing Saturday night with
Coca-Cola night at the races with round one of the Future Cellular Big-10 Series
playoffs on the docket. The super late models will race for 200-laps in the
first of three championship determining races.
The late model stocks will race for 100 laps with limited late models, pure
stocks and fast and furious fours also on the schedule.
Friday will be the season finale for the legends and bandolero racers on the
quarter-mile oval.
