QUERY TAKES ROUND ONE IN FINAL LAPS
Sharpe Continues Late Model Stock Winning Ways
CONCORD, N.C. – Freddie Query of Mooresville scored the victory in round one
of the Future Cellular Big-10 Series super late model playoffs Saturday
night at Concord Motorsport Park. Query won the $5,000 top prize for winning
the 200-lap feature on Coca Cola night at the races.
Travis Sharpe of Swansea, S.C. won his ninth Coca Cola late model stock
feature of the season in the 100-lap feature. Other winners were: Brian Conforth
of Concord in the 35-lap Tommy Johnson’s Motorsports Warehouse limited late
model feature; Steve Irvin of Concord in the 25-lap Speedway Plumbing pure
stock feature; and Chad Miller of Concord in the 15-lap Speedway Plumbing fast
and furious fours feature.
Preston Peltier of Concord started on the pole and set the pace for the
first 39 laps of the super late model feature. A mechanical problem sent him to
the pits handing the top spot to Charlie Bradburry of Chelsea, Ala.
Bradburry led until lap 53 when Query moved into the top spot and it looked
like it was going to be a traditional Query run to the finish. Rookie driver
Clay Jones of Goldsboro had different thoughts and late in the race he
chased down the defending champion and on lap 188 bumped Query and moved into the
lead.
Just as the large crowd figured they saw a rookie take it to the track’s
all-time win leader; Jones car started to falter and with three laps remaining
he rolled down pit road out of gas. Query went on to score his fifth win of the
season and 87th of his career.
“The last ten laps I had a lot of luck,” said Query, who pitted midway
through the race. “I knew that it was going to take about 24 gallons of gas for
us to make the race, and that I could not make it. At the end he outran me,
as I was out of control out there. The track was real slick.”
“I kept waiting for him to run out of gas, and he about didn't.”
The cars are allowed a capacity of 22 gallons in their fuel cells.“We knew when we started that we were going to take that chance and not pit,”
said Jones. “They told me to save tires and save gas the whole race. We
almost made it.”
Ted Musgrave Jr. of Mooresville finished second with Bradburry third. Jimmy
Simpson of Concord was fourth with Mark Reedy of Kannapolis fifth.
In the late model stock feature, Roger Lee Newton of Concord jumped from the
pole position and led for the first 70 laps. Point leader, Sharpe, chased
Newton for a number of laps before moving into the top spot.
He held off the challenge of Chuck Crump of Star who finished second. Shaun
Mangum of Monroe was third with Jamie Hayes and Bo Foust, both of Charlotte,
completing the top five.
Jay Payne of Thomasville returned to racing at Concord and took the early
lead in the limited late model feature. On lap 23 Conforth was able to move past
and roll to his career-first Concord victory.
Bobby Measmer Jr. of Concord finished second with Wayne Callahan of Monroe
third. Payne finished fourth and Brian Pedrick of Denver rounded out the top
five.
Irvin and Brian Love of Mt. Pleasant waged a tremendous side-by-side battle
throughout the pure stock feature. Irvin won over Love with Alvin Thomas of
Monroe third.
Miller continued his winning ways in the fast and furious fours feature
winning over Brad Deal of Mt. Pleasant and Ben Smith of Harrisburg.
