KEVIN LOVE GETS FIRST SUPER LATE MODEL WIN
CONCORD, N.C. – Kevin Love of Midland scored his career first Future
Cellular Big-10 Series super late model victory Saturday night at Concord
Motorsport Park. Also, Claude Kelly of Pine Ridge S.C. became the ninth different
driver to win this season in the ultra-competitive NASCAR Coca-Cola late
model stock feature.
Other winners were: Kyle Beattie of Concord in the 50-lap 600 Racing thunder
roadster feature; Brian Pedrick of Denver in the 35-lap Tommy Johnson’s
Motorsports Warehouse limited late model feature; Steve Irvin of Concord in the
20-lap Speedway Plumbing pure stock feature; and Chad Miller, also of Concord,
in the 15-lap Speedway Plumbing fast and furious fours feature.
Ted Musgrave Jr. of Mooresville started on the pole in the 200-lap super
late model feature and led the first three laps before fellow Mooresville
resident Freddie Query moved to the point. Query led until lap 49 when Love, who
started fifth, moved to the top spot.
A long green flag run lasted until lap 122 when caution flew and everyone
hit pit road. Concord’s Jimmy Simpson won the race off pit road and took the
lead, but couldn’t hold off Query who restarted behind him. Love had a long
pit stop, but patiently moved back through the field and on lap 176 he muscled
his way past Query and back to the top spot.
Late in the race Query closed to within a car length, but was not able to
stop the three-time late model stock champion for his getting his first super
late model win. It was Love’s 43rd career win at the speedway. Query finished
second with Clay Jones of Goldsboro third. Simpson and Musgrave completed
the top five.
Concord’s Shane Brafford returned to racing and made his presence know early
jumping from the pole to the early lead. Point leader Travis Sharpe of
Swansea, S.C. moved from the fourth-starting spot to take the lead on lap 19.
Sharpe’s run at the point would end on lap 58 when a flat tire sent him to
the pits giving the top position to Justin Hill of Concord. Hill rolled to an
apparent win until his car was disqualified in post-race inspection giving the
victory to Kelly.
Linny White of Colton, Calif. finished second with Shaun Mangum of Monroe
third. Chuck Crump of Star and Todd Bradburry of Concord completed the top
five.
Jeff Melton of Monroe had a dominating performance in the limited late model
feature. However, in post-race inspection a carburetor infraction resulted
in his disqualification giving the victory to Pedrick.
He was followed across the line by Terry Hoggard of Concord and Jimmy Voyles
of China Grove. Jay Payne of Thomasville was fourth with Kenneth Cook of
Concord fifth.
Beattie continued his winning ways in the thunder roadster feature. Drew
Calhoun of Southern Pines finished second with Concord drivers Adam Welch and
Jim Fluharty third and fourth. Nick Tucker of Kannapolis finished fifth.
Irvin scored another pure stock win when Alvin Thomas of Monroe and Brian
Love of Mt. Pleasant crashed while racing for the lead. He was followed by
Mark Dyer of Locust and David Miller of Stanfield.
Bobby Measmer Jr. of Concord won again in the fast and furious fours feature
over Ben Smith of Harrisburg and Bobby Cooper of Concord.
Exciting racing continues Saturday night with M.A.L. Entertainment
presenting round three – the Championship Finale – for the Big-10 Series super late
models racing for 200 laps. The NASCAR late model stocks will also be
highlighted with a 100 lap feature. Also on the schedule will be features for limited
late models, thunder roadsters, pure stocks and fast and furious fours.
