CLAY JONES GETS CAREER-FIRST BIG-10 SERIES WIN AT CONCORD
Query Earns $10,000 Championship

CONCORD, N.C. – Clay Jones, the 18-year old racer from Goldsboro, N.C., earned his career-first Future Cellular Big-10 Series victory Saturday night at Concord Motorsport Park. Freddie Query of Mooresville survived a pair of flat tires to finish second and clinch the track championship worth $10,000. Other winners were: Travis Sharpe of Swansea, S.C. in the 100-lap NASCAR Coca-Cola late model stock feature; Brian Conforth of Concord in the 35-lap Tommy Johnson’s Motorsports Warehouse limited late model feature; D.J. Krentz of Huntersville in the 35-lap INEX/600 Racing thunder roadster feature; Alvin Thomas of Monroe in the 20-lap Speedway Plumbing pure stock feature; and Chad Miller of Concord in the 15-lap Speedway Plumbing fast and furious fours feature.

Query started second in the 200-lap super late model feature and jumped into the early lead setting the pace until lap 71 when a flat right front tire slowed him handing the top spot to Jones. Query lost two laps making the tire change. On lap 82 Jones and most of the lead cars pitted giving the top spot to Matt Brooks of Concord. While Brooks lead the race, Query raced past him getting the first of his laps back. A caution a few laps later gave Query his other lap back as he was the “lucky dog” – a rule for the championship playoffs that give the first car not on the lead lap a lap back. On lap 105 Jones raced back into the lead that he held until lap 114 when Query, who charged back through the field, took the top spot back. From there it
looked like Query would win but with the race running extra laps to get a green flag finish, Query had a second flat tire and with four laps remaining Jones moved back to the point. Jones won with Query surviving the flat to finish second. Jimmy Simpson of Concord was solid all night and finished third with Terry Brooks of Concord fourth and Mark Reedy of Kannapolis fifth.

Randy Burnett, the Missouri transplant now living in Kannapolis, led the first 70 laps of the late model stock feature before track champion Travis Sharpe took the advantage on lap 71. Shane Brafford of Concord was changing through the field in the last 30 laps and on lap 95 moved inside Sharpe and to the top spot. Brafford was the first car under the checkered flag, but a post-race infraction with a spacer in the carburetor of his car disqualified him give the win to Sharpe, his 10th of the year. Chuck Crump of Star finished second while Concord’s Ross Furr finished third. Linny White and Roger Lee Newton, both of Concord, completed the top five.

Bobby Measmer Jr. started on the pole and led the first half of the limited stock feature before Conforth, who started sixth, took the lead. Conforth rolled to his second win of the season over Jeff Melton of Monroe. Measmer was third with Brian Pedrick of Denver fourth and Terry Hoggard of Concord fifth. Hoggard’s finish gave him the championship by a mere two points over Pedrick.

Krentz started on the front row and earned his second win of the season in the thunder roadster feature. Kyle Beattie, a six-time winner this season from Concord, finished second while Jon Michael of Statesville was third.

Alvin Thomas was impressive earning his second pure stock win of the season. Steve Irvin of Concord and Brian Love of Mt. Pleasant finished second and third. Love was crowned the 2005 track champion.

Miller won a photo-finish by a few inches over Smith in the fast and furious fours feature. Brandon Cooper of Concord was third.
