Newton and Payne collect wins at Concord Speedway

CONCORD, N.C. – Roger Lee Newton Claimed the trophy in the HutchBSR Pro Late Models 100 lap feature Saturday night at Concord Speedway while Jay Payne picked up another win in the Wilburn Auto Body Late Model Stock Car division.  Other winners included Brian Love in the Coca- Cola Pure Stocks; Tracy Mullis in the Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours; Rusty Drye in the Town & Country Ford Thunderstox race one and Kirby Allen in Thunderstox 2.

All the racing action was fit into Scott Clark’s Toyota City’s Night at the Races for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series plus race 2 of the Pro5 Series for Pro Late Models.

The Pro Late Model event took the green took the green at 10:52 PM, very late due to rain delay earlier.  Mark Reedy in his #12 Ford took the point from the outside front row on the start.  Reedy held the lead only for the first two tours until Newton muscled by and kept the point for all remaining laps except on lap 83 led by Colt James.  Not that the race was without excitement.  Fastest qualifier Preston Peltier a seven, moving him halfway back in filed for the start, but, Peltier had worked his way to third in the waning laps.  Colt James challenged Newton throughout the last 30 laps but couldn’t quite close the deal.  At the finish Newton was first, James a close second, Peltier an even closer third, Bobby Measmer, Jr. fourth and newcomer Grant Davidson of Asheboro in fifth.

Jay Payne’s trip to the Country Inns and Suites of Concord & Kannapolis was his fourth of the season.  Interestingly, Payne arrived at the speedway just before time trails started and had no practice!  No worries.  Payne claimed fastest lap anyway, starting fifth after the draw.  Jerry “Doc” Miracle led lap one, Bobby Measmer Jr took the point on lap two and held on until lap 17 when Payne worked his way to the front and held on through the finish of the forty-lap contest.

M easmer crossed in second, Miracle third, Clinton baker fourth and Jeff Graves fifth.

Barry Reed, Brian Love, Jamille Flaquer and Jeff Melton put on a close dice throughout the Coca-Cola Pure Stock Contest.  At the checkers Brian Love in the #44 Dodge claimed the trophy.  Reed claimed second, Melton third, Flaquer fourth and Charles Faassen fifth.

The Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours started seventeen cars.  At the finish Tracy Mullis claimed the win with Barry Canter just a few inches off Mullis’s bumper in second.  Chad Miller, Justin Potter and Dean Lancaster were third through fifth.

The Town and Country Ford Thunderstox opened and closed the evening of racing.  Rusty Drye won the first tilt while Kirby Allen claimed the second event after the first two finishers failed inspection.
