Twice is nice for Kenny Brooks at Concord Speedway
CONCORD, N.C. – It was another great night of hot action for the Independent Tribune Cabarrus County Night for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Concord Speedway. Kenny Brooks claimed dual victories in the double header running of the Wilburn Auto Body Late Model Stock Cars. Brian Love added one more trophy to his collection and celebrated his fifth victory in a row in the Coca-Cola Pure Stocks. It was also a great time to salute “Soldier Boy” Brian Irby on his first victory in the Fast and Furious Fours and Matt Drye found himself in the Country Inn & Suites Victory Lane celebrating twice tonight in the Town & Country Ford Thunderstox division.
Brooks now has three victories in four starts this season in the highly competitive Late Model Stock Cars. Kenny started the day with a fast qualifying run of 16.999 seconds or 106.515 miles per hour around the tricky TriOval, but drew a seven to set himself up for a march through the field to take his first win in the 25-lap opening dash. Afterwards, Brooks drew a seven yet again to invert the field for the start of the second race, forcing a run through the field once more.
Jerry Miracle of Monroe crossed the line second in the opening tilt with Bobby Measmer, Jr, a life-long friend of Brooks crossing in third. Measmer claimed second in the final Late Model event with Miracle shifting to third position in the second Late Model contest. The two racing events also led to a shake-up in the standings as “Doc” Miracle tied Jay Payne after the first race and moved two pints up after the second event.
The Coca-Cola Pure Stocks fell prey to the fleeting #44 of Mount Pleasant’s Brian Love for the fifth consecutive event. Love qualified fastest but started eighth after the draw. Jeff Melton took the lead on the start and held on for the bulk of the first half. Love briefly led for lap 17, and then Melton surged to the point again until Love ducked under to lead laps 26 through 30. Melton scored second and Barry Reed in the #98 Chevy filed in third.
The theme on the #33 Honda of Brian Irby reads “Soldier Boy”, as well it should since Irby is on active duty with the United States Army. Thus, it is almost poetic that Irby claimed his first-ever win in the Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious going into Independence Day week. Barry Canter was fast qualifier in the division, however, started eighth after the draw with Irby lined up in fifth. Irby danced through a first-lap gaggle of cars when someone missed a shift on the start making the pack a literal pack through the first turn. Irby came by leading lap two and was the class of the division on this night, leading the rest of the event. Chad Miller, the driver-mechanic-engineer who originally constructed Irby’s car, finished in second and an ever improving Dean Lancaster rolled by in third.
Both Town & Country Ford Thunderstox events were claimed by Matt Drye of Rimertown, NC. Rusty Drye was second in both and Bob Wallace of Concord third… in both.
Concord Speedway will be silent on Saturday July 3rd in celebration of Independence Day.
Saturday July 10th is the rain date for the postponed April 24th Tim Marburger Honda Stanly County Night presented by the Stanly News and Press and USG Sheetrock. Stanly County residents with a valid photo ID will be admitted for just $3.00. Once again, two-25 laps Late Model Stock Car races are on the schedule, 25 laps for the Fast and Furious Fours, 30 laps for Pure Stocks and the traditional twin 15 lap contests for the Thunderstox. Three Dog Night means three Hot Dogs or Corndogs for just $3.00 for everyone. Three contestants will be chosen from those attending to see just how many hot dogs they can eat in one minute, with $100.00 going to the winner.
Concord Speedway is located on Highway 601 South of Concord. For information call 704-782-4221 or visit the website at www.concordspeedway.net
