Bobby Measmer, Jr. claims two trophies at Concord Speedway

CONCORD, N.C. – Bobby Measmer, Jr of Concord took the trophies in both Wilburn Auto Body Late Model Stock Car races Saturday night during the Tim Marburger Honda Stanly County Night activities presented by The Stanly News and Press and USG Sheetrock.  Brian Love of Mount Pleasant gathered his sixth-straight win in the Coca Cola Pure Stocks, Eric Harrington of Kannapolis won the Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours tilt and Matt Drye of Rimertown claimed both Town & Country Thunderstox contests.

Measmer claimed the fast qualifying lap in the afternoon at 105.745 miles per hour.  Later, in the pre-race awards he stated that “The team threw a really different set-up at the car and it worked!”  Measmer drew a four, inverting the top four qualifiers for the start.  Jay Payne led the first ten laps of the first race with Measmer able to capture to lead on lap eleven and hold on through the twenty five laps.  Payne crossed the line in second place with Jerry “Doc” Miracle of Monroe claiming third.  Measmer then drew a four, again, inverting the top four finishers in the first race to start the second Late Model contest.  Miracle led only two laps of the latter event before Measmer again move to the point on lap three, holding on fairly easily to the end.  The finishing order of race two was identical to race one.

I In my humble opinion the Coca-Cola Pure Stock match was the most exciting of the races Saturday night.  Jeff Melton in the #6 Thunderbird, Bryan Thomas in the #26 Chevy and Brian Love in the #44 Dodge diced for first for the first third of the laps until there was contact coming into Turn 2 between the mounts of Melton and Thomas.  The result was a massive crash during which Melton’s Thunderbird almost launched itself over the inner retaining wall! Both Melton and Thomas retired with crash damage.  On the restart, Charles Hutto in the #1 Chevrolet took up the challenge and was pushing Love hard until a mechanical issue took Hutto out of contention.  Love was able to continue to his sixth consecutive Pure Stock victory.  Remarkably, Love has entered only six events on the season, thus, he is batting .1000!  Barry Reed of Flat Rock, South Carolina took second place and Charles Faassen of Monroe claimed third.

Eric Harrington of Kannapolis led flag to flag in the Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours event with plenty of action behind him.  Brother Wayne Harrington crashed hard into the inside wall off Turn 3 on lap 12 in what looked like a mechanical failure in the front of his Honda.  Barry Canter in his #00 mount and Chad Miller in the #88 made contact in lap 23 with Canter spinning to the inside and out of contention.  At the checkers Justin Potter of Huntersville garnered second place with Chad Miller third.

Both Town and Country Ford Thunderstox features had the same finishing order with Matt Drye first, his father Rusty Drye second, Kirby Allen third and Dalton Tompkins fourth.

Next Saturday, July 17th is WHELEN Night at the Races.  That afternoon at 4:30, the Sons of Thunder Ministries are holding a non-denominational youth meeting on the quarter-mile paddock area in the Arena Racing Outdoors tent.  Music, praise and the message brought by Paul Jenkins, founder of “That Youth Thing”.  Attendees will be admitted to the races that evening for a non-perishable can of food and $1.00.  Youth of all ages are invited!  All food and beverage items from the Checkered Flag Grill are just $2.00 or less, Sno-Kones are 75 cents.  The racing schedule includes all our traditional events plus race 4 of the Pro 5 Pro Late Model Series.  Tickets go on sale at 6:00 PM with racing at 7:30. General admission tickets are $12.00 for adults.  Children age 11 and under are admitted free with a ticketed adult.

Open practice is being held Friday evening for all divisions competing on the 17th.  Pit gates open at 5:30 with rotating practice from 6:00 until 8:30 PM.  Pit passes are $20, grandstand admission is free.

C oncord Speedway is located on Highway 601 South of Concord.  For information call 704-782-4221 or visit the website at www.concordspeedway.net
