Bobby Measmer, Jr. claims the Pro Late Model win for Town & Country Ford Kids’ Night at Concord Speedway.
CONCORD, N.C. –Bobby Measmer, Jr. claimed the Hutch/BSR Pro Late Model trophy Saturday night at Concord Speedway.Other winners include Jay Payne in the Town- & Country Ford Late Model Division, Jim Fluharty in the Wilburn Auto Body INEX Thunder Cars Division, Jeff Melton in the Coca-Cola Pure Stocks Division and Wayne Harrington in the Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours Division.
The kids enjoyed a great night of parade laps in race cars, train rides, moonwalks, give-a-ways and wild racing on a hot Carolina summer night.
Bobby Measmer, Jr. claimed the Hutch/BSR Pro Late Model trophy for the sixty lap race. Mark Brooks jumped out to an early lead but went hard into the wall in Turn One on lap eleven of the race. Matt Brooks and Bobby Measmer, Jr. went nose to bumper for the lead. This was the third win of the season for Measmer in the series. Cooper Faassen finished second followed by Matt Brooks in third.
Jay Payne was first at the line to take the checkers in the Town & Country Ford Late Model race. The first caution waived just eight laps into the race when Jerry Miracle and Joey Rinehardt banged fenders in Turn three, causing Rinehardt a flat tire and spin. Clinton Baker had nowhere to go and hit Rinehardt hard. The next caution waived on lap sixteen when Steve Ackerly turned Jerry Miracle coming out of Turn One. Miracle went around and Ackerly was sent to the end of the line. Payne led every lap of the race despite the hard-racing all around him and the bumper-to-bumper racing with Kenny Brooks. Brooks finished second and Bobby Measmer, Jr. finished third.
Fans saw an incredible race as a season-long battle between Adam Welch and Hunter Bledsoe hit a breaking point and Jim Fluharty ran away with the win. Hunter Bledsoe led the field to the green, but Adam Welch was right on his bumper. Welch almost spun going into Turn One on lap two, but was able to save it. He wasn’t so lucky on lap five. Dustin Allmon, Rick Fleming and Jim Fluharty were three-wide battling for the third position as Bledsoe and Welch were battling for the top spot. Both the #71 and #8 crashed hard into the wall – and each other- before the #71 came to a rest just past the start-finish line. “He door-slammed me like a little kid,” said Welch while the race was under caution for debris from the wreck. Jim Fluharty chalked up his third victory of the year, followed by Dustin Allmon and Rick Fleming.
Jeff Melton scored his sixth win of the season when he took the checkered flag in Saturday night’s Coca-Cola Pure Stocks race. Bryan Thomas jumped out to any early lead when the cars took the green, but Jeff Melton claimed the spot a few laps in to the race. Melton and Thomas were battling for the lead on lap twenty when Thomas’ machine fell off the pace to bring out the only caution of the race. Melton dominated the remainder of the race as the other contestants raced for position two and three-wide behind him. Charles Hutto finished second followed by Randy McAnulty in third.
Wayne Harrington took home the first place trophy in the Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours Division after taking the lead on lap one and never looking back, even as the cars battled three-wide for position in his rearview mirror. The caution flag waived twice during the race, first when Eric Harrington spun on lap eight and then again on lap nine when Matt Harper made contact with the wall in Turn One. Chad Miller finished second followed by Barry Canter in third.
Racing returns to the quarter-mile on Friday as Legends and Bandoleros take to the track on Friday night and Sunday afternoon. The Sunday race is a make up for the May17th rainout.
Mobil1 is partnering with Concord Speedway to present a very special event for the HutchBSR Pro Late Model Division on August 15. The event is a $5,000 to win, 100 green-flag laps contest.
Twenty one drivers are currently registered to race in the speedway’s new for 2009 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division 1 and while all of those drivers have actually competed in one or more series races this season, economic circumstances have held the fields to an average of just over six entries for the events run so far.
Pro Late Model Rookie point’s leader Cooper Faassen of Monroe, N.C. was asked how he felt the special event would affect the evening. “I believe it will bring out more racers! We’ll race harder for the purse, but smarter as well, to be in the running at the finish. All green flag laps means we’ll be able to pit and work on the car without losing laps under the caution if is a problem develops. That in it will keep more drivers in contention. I think it ads a lot of excitement.
Other than the all-green-flag laps regulation, all other Pro Late Model race procedures will be in place, including the always thrilling double-file restarts that have been part of the program since the inception of the Hutch/BSR division at the beginning of the season.
The Mobil1 special event is part of the Whelen Night at the Races for the Whelen All-American Series at Concord Speedway. As part of Whelen night, the speedway is inviting law enforcement and emergency services departments from the region to be a part of the pre race festivities for the evening. Whelen manufactures emergency lighting that will be displayed on the emergency vehicles.
The race schedule that evening includes 20 laps for the Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours, 30 laps for the Coca-Cola Pure Stocks, 40 laps for the Town & Country Ford Late Models, 30 laps for the Wilburn Auto Body Thunder Cars as well as the Pro Late Model event.
Concord Speedway is located on Highway 601 South of Concord. For information call 704-782-4221 or visit the website at www.concordspeedway.net
