Colt James wins the Whelen Night at the Races/Mobil1 Pro Late Model 100 at Concord Speedway

CONCORD, N.C - Colt James won the Hutch/BSR Pro Late Model trophy Saturday night at Concord Speedway.Other winners include Steve Ackerly in the Town & Country Ford Late Model Division, Adam Welch in the Wilburn Auto Body INEX Thunder Cars, Jeff Melton  in the Coca-Cola Pure Stocks and Wayne Harrington in the Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours.

Colt James wins the Whelen Night at the Races/Mobil 1 Pro Late Model 100 after swapping the lead numerous times with Preston Peltier, who crashed on sixty-five in Turn Three due to a failure in the steering while leading the race.  There were four cautions during the race.  The first yellow waived when four cars tangled on lap seven in Turn Three, the second on lap thirty-two when A.J. Frank and Roger Lee Newton spun in Turn Three, the third on lap forty-one when Mark Brooks had a solo spin and crash in Turn One (resulting in a red flag delay) and the last for Peltier’s race-ending crash.  This was the first win for James in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Concord Speedway and he was the winner of the A S A Super Sonic 100 in July of 2008. There were six lead changes between three drivers. Jeff Fultz finished second followed by Austin Kirkpatrick in third.

Steve Ackerly of Medford, N.Y. won his fifth race of the season after dominating the Town & Country Ford Late Model race.  Ackerly, the points leader, led green flag to checkered flag defending the position from Jerry Miracle who was beginning to close in at the end of the race.  Miracle finished second and Larry Huneycutt finished third.

Adam Welch, Wilburn Auto Body Thunder Car points leader, won his eleventh race of the season.  Welch, Dustin Allmon and Jim Fluharty battled nose-to-tail and fender-to-bumper for the first eleven laps before Welch put a little distance between himself and Allmon.  Allmon finished second and Fluharty finished third.

Jeff Melton beat Charles Hutto by a bumper to win the Coca-Cola Pure Stocks race.  This was the seventh win of the season for Melton who led the first lap of the race, but was fending off a strong challenge from Bryan Thomas when Buddy Compton went hard into the wall going into Turn Three after losing a wheel on lap fourteen.  The race was red-flagged for eleven minutes while the track crew cleaned up debris.  Thomas had the point when the race went green, but Melton took the lead back on lap fifteen.  Hutto, in the second position, closed in on Melton and the two battled side-by-side for the lead on the last lap all the way from Turn Two to the start/finish line. Thomas finished third.

It was brother versus brother as the Harrington boys battled for the win in the Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours race.  Barry Canter was out to an early lead when the field took the green flag, but fell off the pace on lap eight after walling Turn One during a side-by-side battle for the lead with Eric Harrington the lap before.  Immediately after the first yellow flag waived, Brian Irby and Ben Smith collided and spun in between turns one and two.  Wayne Harrington took the lead on lap eight and defended the position for the remaining twelve laps.  Wayne Harrington got the win, Eric Harrington finished second and Brian Irby came home third.

Friday evening the INEX Legends and Bandoleros returned to action on the quarter-mile facility at Concord Speedway.  The winners included; in the RPM ProFormance Legends divisions,  Pros- Keith Newcomer Concord, NC #98 Newcomer Racing - Mundy Motorsports '37 Chevrolet Coupe.  Masters- Charles Kiser Walnut-Cove, NC # 28 Kiser Racing '34 Ford Coupe.
Semi Pros- Gregory Lang Davidson. NC #54 Racing Electronics - Speed 51 '34 Ford Sedan.
Young Lions-Harrison Rhodes High Point, NC # 36 Chick Fila - All Reash Produce - Laser Refrigeration '34 Ford Coupe.

Legends and Bandoleros race the quarter-mile again Sunday afternoon August 16th with pit gates opening at 2:00 PM, heats at 3:45.

The half-mile will be idle Saturday August 22nd but, racing will continue on the quarter-mile for the Legends and Bandoleros.  The weekend double-header will see action Friday August 21st and Saturday August 22nd with gates opening at 5:30 PM both evenings.  Heat races commence at 7:45 with features to follow.

August 29th the A.S.A South Late Model Series returns to America’s Super Short Track with the Super Sonic 100.

The U.S.A.R. Pro Cup Series makes its second appearance of the season Saturday September 5th on the TriOval. The event is also the first in the Pro Cup Championship Series.
