Kevin Love captures championship with victory

CONCORD, N.C. – Kevin Love of Midland, NC, driving the #88 A Plus Auto Salvage / Sogo Japanese Steakhouse 2006 Ford Fusion took the trophy in the last Town & Country Ford Late Model Stock Car event of the 2008 season and walked away with his fourth Concord Motorsport Park NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Championship.  Other winners Saturday night in the Whelen All-American Series finale’ were Jay Payne of Thomasville in the J R D earthworks Limited Late Model division; Jeff Melton of Concord in the Coca-Cola Pure Stocks; Tracy Mullis of Indian Trail in the Tim Marburger Honda fast & Furious Fours and Rusty Drye Rockwell in the Insurance Auto Auctions Bootlegger Brigade.

It was all about the Concord Motorsport Park track championships Saturday night as the modern-day motorized gladiators prepared to do battle for the Insurance Auto Auctions Night at the races.  Kevin Love came into the event needing to finish sixth or better in the double points event to ice the championship.  Second seeded Chuck Crump of Star, NC in the R. L. Kellam Company 2008 Ford Fusion took the lead from the pole position and led through lap 37 when Love eased by for the lead, then Justin Hill of Concord in the #45 Chevy slipped by Crump as those two found themselves three-wide in Turn One with a lapped vehicle.  Love then set his sails and led to the checkers to clinch his fourth title in high-style.  Justin hill came home second; Crump third; Chad Mullis of Mint Hill in the #9 Ford came in fourth and Shaun Mangum on Monroe was fifth in the #5 Monte Carlo.

The was only a six-point spread between leader Mike Terry of Charlotte and second place Jay Payne of Thomasville, NC coming into the evening.  Terry had a must-have situation of finishing ahead of, or just behind Payne to clinch, as one more position away would give Payne the championship by a mere two points.  Terry did what was necessary, finishing second to Payne while holding off a very determined Steve Ackerly who dogged Terry right up to the checkered flag.  In the race, Jay Payne claimed the trophy in the #08 Smiley's Barbecue / Cheerwine 2008 Ford Fusion; Terry was second in the J R D Earthworks Chevy; Steve Ackerly third in the #66 Town & Country Ford 2007 Ford Fusion; fourth went to Kenny Sigmon of Denver, NC in the #48 Chevy and Jeff Melton of Concord crossed the line in fifth in his flamed #6.

The Coca-Cola Pure Stock contest was won by Jeff Melton, his third consecutive, in the #8 R. M. Machine Chevrolet.  Second place went to Clinton Baker on Charleston, Illinois in the #2 Monte Carlo.  The third finisher was Cooper Faasen of Monroe in the #11 Wilburn Auto Body Chevrolet while fourth went to now Pure Stock Champion Charles Hutto of Monroe in the #1 WIXE 1190 AM/Autotrader.com Chevrolet and fifth was Steve Irvin of Concord.

Tracy Mullis of Indian Trail was the victor in the Tim Marburger Honda Fast & Furious Fours.  “Hollywood” Barry Canter of Charlotte claimed second while Chad Miller of Concord claimed the 2008 track championship with a third place finish.  Jake Simpson of Albemarle finished fourth and Cody Carelock of Charlotte was fifth.  Good news for the racers in this division.  Tim Marburger Honda of Albemarle, NC has come on board as division sponsor through the 2011 season!

In the Insurance Auto Auction Bootlegger Brigade, Rusty Drye of Rockwell garnered his fourth victory of five events this season behind the wheel of the “Vigilante” themed car.  Randy McAnulty of Concord finished a hard-fought second in his inaugural stint in the Bootleggers.  Third went to Matt Drye, fourth to David Miller and fifth to Kirby Allen.
